Remember Jarama

Programme for the 2024 Battle of Jarama commemoration organised by the Madrid-based Association of Friends of the International Brigades (AABI), including the unveiling of a memorial to the British volunteers.

Thursday 22 February
Madrid
– 7pm, AABI office (Local 3, Cayetano Pando, Madrid 28047), Yugoslav documentary film ‘Spain Of Our Youth’ (1997, Zdravko Velimirović, 56 mins, Serbian with Spanish subtitles). 

Friday 23 February
Tarancón
– 9am, departure by coach from Hotel Agumar (Paseo de la Reina Cristina 7, Madrid 28014).
– 11am, visit to the Scottish memorial and International Brigade hospital.
– 1.30pm, fraternity lunch.
– 3.30pm, return to Madrid. 

Saturday 24 February
Jarama
– 8.45am, departure by coach from Hotel Agumar.
– Walk across the battlefield, this year dedicated to the Yugoslav and Czech volunteers, with the route following the Dimitrov Battalion’s footsteps and the XV International Brigade’s positions.– Unveiling of a replica of the memorial to the British volunteers who fell at Jarama, sited where the original memorial was raised in 1937.
– 1.30pm, fraternity lunch, Restaurante El Pino, Arganda del Rey.
– 3.30pm, return to Madrid. 

Sunday 25 February
Madrid
– 11am, meeting at Paseo de Moret (close to Moncloa metro and bus station). 
– Tour of University City, including Parque del Oeste, medical faculty building, International Brigade monument and, time permitting, Puente de los Franceses, ending at about 2pm-2.30pm.
– Opportunity to visit Fuencarral cemetery, where there are several memorials to the International Brigades.
