¡No Pasarán! A Night to Remember: 7 December 2013

Tickets are now on sale for a gala evening to mark the 75th anniversary of the return of the British Battalion from Spain. The event will take place at the Rich Mix arts centre in London, along with other activities earlier in the day on Saturday 7 December 2013 – 75 years to the day that the volunteers arrived home at London’s Victoria Station to be greeted by thousands of supporters.

 

Organised by Philosophy Football in association with the IBMT and Thompsons Solicitors, ¡No Pasarán! A Night to Remember will feature music, comedy, film and ideas. Performers include comedian Mark Steel, socialist r’n’b band Thee Faction, actor Maxine Peake, poet Francesca Beard, the soulful sounds of Maddy Carty and a DJ set from PanditG. Bob Crow of the RMT opens the night and historian and IBMT Trustee Richard Baxell speaks on the legacy of the International Brigades, with responses from writers Paul Mason and Daniel Trilling, Stop the War campaigner Salma Yaqoob and Olga Abasolo from Spain's Los Indignados movement.

 

Doors open 6pm and the show starts 7pm at Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London E1 6LA. The Rich Mix café is open from 6pm.

 

There are two FREE events in the afternoon, both at Rich Mix:

Seminar: Indignados, Spain and Lessons of Global Protest, with Olga Abasolo, activist in Los Indignados and Paulo Gerbaudo, author ‘Tweets and the Streets: Social Media and Contemporary Activism’. From 3.30-5.30pm; organised with the journal Soundings.

Teenagers Book Reading with Lydia Syson, author of the teenage novel set in the Spanish Civil War, ‘A World Between Us’.

 

Plus, a guided walk around the anti fascist heritage of London's East End, led by David Rosenberg of East End Walks and author of ‘Battle For The East End: Jewish Responses to Fascism in the 1930s’. Walk starts 1.45pm (not at Rich Mix) and ends at Rich Mix for 5pm.
