‘Goodbye Barcelona’, the musical about a group of British International Brigaders, has opened in Madrid to full houses and critical acclaim.
There were queues around the block on the first night at the Teatro Infanta Isabel at the end of April, and public enthusiasm for the show has continued with each of its weekly performances every Tuesday.
Written by Judith Johnson and Karl Lewkowicz, the musical is more commonly known as “Goodbye Barcelona” and as such was staged with IBMT support at the Arcola Theatre in London in 2011 and afterwards at the Teatre del Raval in Barcelona.
In 2014 the Catalan-language version was judged Best Musical in the annual Spanish Musical Theatre Awards.
The storyline centres on the fate of Sam, an 18-year-old from London’s East End, and a group of other International Brigade volunteers from Britain who travel to Spain to fight fascism. Sam’s mother, Rebecca, follows her son to Spain and both become embroiled in the passions of love and war.
