Campaign to restore village square name in Croatia

Post date: 23/03/2016

A message from the Madrid-based AABI International Brigades friendship group…

After Poland, Croatia… Dragutin Bilić (1907-1937) was one of 1,500 volunteers of the International Brigades from Croatia. He died near Teruel in June 1937. During communist rule in Croatia (1945-1990), the main square in his native village of Betina was named Square of the Fighter in Spain Dragutin Bilić.

The hard right in Croatia is on the rise and the local town council has now removed Bilić’s name.

Our Croat friend Hrvoslav Pavić has asked for our help to have the square renamed after Bilić.

We believe that it is possible to restore the name of the square if this initiative wins international support.
