Drove an ambulance to Spain with George Green and picked up Stephen Spender along the way. Worked in an operating theatre near Arganda during the Battle of Jarama in February 1937. Returned home in June 1937, then drove back to Spain again. Only member of the CPGB ever to sit in the House of Lords - 2nd Baron Mitford.
