Appointed commissar by George Aitken on 22 July 1937. Cited for bravery and wounded at Belchite; promoted to Captain at Teruel. Transferred from Anti-Tanks to British Battalion between September and November 1937. (However, joined gun crews only after Teruel, according to Chris Smith?). 'A strict disciplinarian, but fearless' according to Garry McCartney. 'Very good politically.'
