Negative comments
The records include assessments of the volunteers made by their political superiors in the latter part of the war in Spain. Many are highly derogatory, referring to desertion, drunkenness and indiscipline, but should be taken with a pinch of salt, sometimes a very large amount. They were written for internal use, primarily as an assessment of suitability for future membership of the Communist Party at home and were often made by a party representative who may have had a grudge against certain individuals or may simply have been wrong. Many volunteers with outstanding military records in Spain – including senior ranking officers – received extremely critical assessments.

Oldham Civic Centre

Plaque by ceramics artist Jim Robison to the Oldham volunteers, which was unveiled in 1986. It is located in the reception area of the J R Clynes Building (formally the Old Library), in the Civic Centre building, on Union Street, Oldham, OL1 1UT.

Oldham Clem Beckett Plaque

A great initiative by sheep farmer Karl Jones, who had the plaque made and erected on the side of his farmhouse, which is close to where Clem Beckett lived. It is located at Ivy Cottage, Back o’th’ Low Road, Top o’th’ Meadows, Waterhead, Oldham OL4 3SG. It may be easier to find than it looks: Take Huddersfield Road out of Oldham, turn left into Hollins Road, and just carry on up the hill for about a mile. Ivy Cottage is on the left just after the junction of Back o’th’ Low Road and Top o’th Meadows Lane.

A framed Roll of Honour of Oldham Brigaders who were killed in Spain. It can be viewed by appointment at the Gallery Oldham, 35, Greaves Street, Oldham OL1 1AL.

Oldham Video Memorial

Located in the Digital Kiosk in Oldham Archives, which is open Mon-Fri and Sat morning, at Ascroft Street, Oldham OL1 1HY, as part of the Loom Building in Oldham town centre. The unique account of Oldham’s International Brigaders in the Spanish Civil War forms the centrepiece of a new, permanent digital exhibition in the town’s archives. Oldham council has installed a ‘digital kiosk’ as well as other audio-visual facilities allowing visitors quick access to aspects of the town’s history dating back to 1597. The history of the ten Oldham volunteers - six of whom were killed in action - is told in images and narrative, researched and complied by IBMT North-West stalwart Graham Briggs, together with a short film put together by colleague, Rob Hargreaves. The film is accompanied by music of legendary folk group the Oldham Tinkers, whose moving song Ten Oldham Men features on the group’s hit CD A Lancashire Grace.

Pendle - Nelson

Activists in North Lancashire organised the erection of a plaque dedicated to Iocal International Brigaders from Pendle. It is on Unity Hall, Vernon St, Nelson, Lancashire, BB9 9DE, which was previously the Nelson ILP Socialist Institute.

Roughlee

 Plaque dedicated to the members of the Independent Labour Party and the Clarion Cycling Clubs who volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Mounted at Clarion House, near the village of Roughlee; 39 Jinny Ln, Newchurch-in-Pendle, Burnley BB12 9LL. Paid for and installed by the National Clarion Cycling Club 1895.
