Post date: 20/11/2025

The 2024 Len Crome Memorial Conference, held on 1 November 2025, is now available to watch online.

Three leading historians of the Spanish Civil War – Paul Preston, Helen Graham and Richard Baxell – discuss the topic 'Toxic legacy: the lasting impact of Francoism on Spanish Democracy’.

Paul Preston is one of the world’s foremost historians of the causes, course and consequences of the Spanish Civil War. He is the IBMT’s Founding Chair. His most recent work, 'Perfidious Albion – Britain and the Spanish Civil War', was published in March 2024.

Helen Graham is Emeritus Professor of modern European history at Royal Holloway University of London and is the author of ‘Interrogating Francoism' and ‘The Spanish Civil War: A Very Short Introduction’. She is also an IBMT Patron.

Richard Baxell is the author of 'Forged in Spain'. He is a research fellow at the LSE and the IBMT's Historical Consultant.

The Trust thanks Peter Crome for sending a message about his father, Len Crome, after whom this annual event is named. Len Crome was a Lancashire GP who became the chief medical officer of the Spanish Republic's XV Army Corps, including the 15th International Brigade.
