Among the performers at our forthcoming commemoration in London’s Jubilee Gardens on 2 July will be the acclaimed folk duo na-mara. Thet will be playing other gigs with a Spanish Civil War connection around the same time, as Paul McNamara (one half of the duo) explains here…
I thought IBMT members would be interest to hear of three Spanish Civil War-related events we are involved with in the coming months.
The first is an event on Thursday 7 July organised by what appears to be primarily a ukelele group in Croydon. The website link to the event is here (http://ukulele.magix.net/public/index.htm). It is being organised by Carol Whinnom, who heard us perform a part presentation/part concert about the Spanish Civil War and the story of the Basque Children at Ruskin House in Croydon in May 2012 at an event jointly organised by the local Folk and Blues Club and the Croydon TUC.
The other two events are being organised by comrades in Hull who are raising funds for a monument to remember those from the city who joined the International Brigades. The first event has been deliberately slotted into the opening night of the Hull Folk and Maritime Festival on Friday 15 July. The web link is here: www.hullfolkandmaritimefestival.com/sunday_option_2.html#one. Our understanding is that the main pub singaround of the festival (in the Minerva) will be halted for a 45 minute performance by us of Spanish Civil War-related material.
The same organisers – my link is with Gary Hammond, the excellent percussionist with Hull-based folk duo The Hut People – are then putting on a further fundraising event to the same end at St Mary's Church, Lowgate, Hull, HU1 1EJ on the evening of 25 September at 5pm. We understand we will be performing alongside Joe Solo from Scarborough who, as you will know, has previously released an album of songs relating to the Spanish Civil War (https://joesolomusic.bandcamp.com/album/no-pasaran).
