Don Watson writes:
On 7 November 2016 the Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne, Councillor Hazel Stephenson, unveiled a memorial to the men from the North East of England who were killed with the International Brigade in Spain. The memorial was sponsored by the IBMT and the GMB, RMT and Unite trade unions, the North East Co-op and Jarrow Trades Union Council. It stands in the grounds of Newcastle Civic Centre and lists the names and birthplaces of the 35 men from the region who were killed in Spain.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by around 60 people. John Coan of Unite the Union said: “Solidarity is the greatest expression of humanity because it is a combination of love and strength. The people who went to fight in Spain understood this and were willing to give their lives for freedom and justice. They embodied everything we aspire to in our movement and we will never forget their sacrifice.”
