New issue of IBMT magazine out now, marking 85 years since the Battle of Jarama

Post date: 19/01/2022

Cover: Surviving members of the British Battalion following the Battle of Jarama, February 1937.

Issue 1-2022 of the IBMT magazine ¡No Pasaran! went out to members last week. The cover story reflects on the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Jarama, when the International Brigades and the Republican Army managed to repel Franco’s forces from Madrid after days of bloody and chaotic battle.

The theme of Jarama recurs in a piece about Manchester Brigader Bert Maskey, whose disappearance or death during the battle has thus far remained a mystery. Mike Wild presents a never before seen photo and proposes a theory of Maskey’s role when he died and why he was never identified.

Other highlights include Veronica Maughan updating the story of her great-aunt Margot Miller, who served in Spain as part of the British Medical Unit, historian Daniel Gray spotlighting the Basque refugee children who went on to become professional footballers, an obituary for IBMT Ireland Secretary Manus O’Riordan and Mike Arnott’s review of a new book on Scots in the Spanish Civil War.

All paid-up members, households and affiliated organisations will have received the latest issue. Members receive three issues of the magazine a year. Keep up to date with your membership so you never miss an issue by renewing here.
