Following an amendment to the Trust’s constitution that was agreed last year, the size of the Executive Committee has been reduced from 15 to 14 members.
Committee members will serve for 12 months as Trustees of the IBMT until the next Annual General Meeting, which is planned to be held in Hull in October 2018.
Three IBMT Officers, Richard Baxell (Chair), Jim Jump (Secretary) and Manuel Moreno (Treasurer), were re-elected unopposed. Marlene Sidaway (President) does not have to stand for annual re-election.
A ballot among the 70 members attending the AGM was necessary for the remaining 10 Executive Committee seats, with 13 candidates nominated to stand.
The result saw three members elected for the first time:
– Lisa Croft, from Bolton, who is the grand-daughter of an International Brigader and who has been active in campaigns for memorials in Lancashire;
– Alex Gordon, from London, who is a past President of RMT and current Chair of the Marx Memorial Library;
– John Haywood, from Banbury, a member of the Oxfordshire committee that has raised the new memorial to the International Brigades in Oxford.
They replace three members who failed to win re-election: Charles Jepson, Nina Londragan and Danny Payne, who were first elected to the Executive Committee in 2012, 2016 and 2012 respectively.
In addition, Dolores Long decided to step down and not seek re-election. She has served continuously on the committee since 2002, including five years as Chair of the Trust.
At the AGM, President Marlene Sidaway paid tribute to the outstanding record of service achieved by Dolores, who is the daughter of the British Battalion’s last commander in Spain, Sam Wild. She noted that Dolores has insisted that she will continue to be involved in IBMT activities both nationally and regionally.
IBMT Chair Richard Baxell offered commiserations and thanks to the other outgoing Executive Committee members – and welcomed the three newcomers.
Each member attending the AGM was invited to cast up to 10 votes in the election. The total numbers of votes cast for the 13 candidates were (from highest to lowest; the final three were not elected): Mary Greening (56), Mike Arnott (52), Manus O’Riordan (51), Alex Gordon (48), Pauline Fraser (47), Marshall Mateer (47), Richard Thorpe (45), Christopher Hall (42), John Haywood (42), Lisa Croft (40), Nina Londragan (34), Danny Payne (34) and Charles Jepson (30).
