Message from Amadeo Barceló, President of the Asociación Bajoaragonesa de Agitación y Propaganda (saboresdecaspe@gmail.com) and archaeologist Salvador Melguizo (smelguizo@gmail.com)…
Our association, the ABAP, with the collaboration of the city council of Caspe and the government of Aragón, is preparing a commemoration of the Battle of Caspe, which took place in our city and the surrounding area between 15 and 28 March 1938 as part of the Battle of Aragón.
Volunteers from the International Brigades fought side by side in our country as defenders of the Second Spanish Republic. Our purpose is to recall the battle as a historic event but also to remember the fighters who joined the fray.
For the past two years we have undertaken various activities, mainly focused on recovering through archeological operations those fighters’ remains in order to provide them with a worthy funeral. To date we have celebrated two events as you can see as follows (in Spanish):

Next March will be the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Caspe, so we are going to make special efforts to organise a major commemoration. Our hope is that the weekend of 15 to 17 March will be a meeting point with history as we honour the International Brigades.
We are planning various activities: lectures, guided visits to the battle scene in different languages and, last but not less, the inauguration of a monument in Caspe in memory of the International Brigades.
We hope many people can join us. Although our association isn’t able to offer any financial support, we are negotiating discounts on accommodation.
Mark this date in your diary for 2018. We will be announcing more news as soon as possible.
