A booklet detailing the role that Islington played in the Spanish Civil War is now available to download as a PDF (see below).
The 26-page document gives an overview of British reaction to the war and information on the 30 International Brigade volunteers who came from the Islington area in north London. It also focuses on the local Aid Spain movement and opposition to the official government policy of 'non-intervention' in the war.
The booklet is part of a collaborative project involving Islington Museum and the Marx Memorial Library (MML). It was produced to accompany an exhibition at Islington Museum earlier this year, which displayed six newly conserved Aid Spain banners and other artefacts from the MML archives.
The booklet was researched and written by Roz Currie, Curator of Islington Museum, Susan Hahn of Islington Heritage Service and Meirian Jump, Archivist and Library Manager at the MML.
