Greetings and news from Spain

Post date: 18/12/2016

We have receieved these New Year greetings from AABI (Association of Friends of the International Brigades), our sister organisation in Spain…

As holidays and the 2017 New Year approach, we want to send a greeting card with which we express our best wishes to all, particularly for those who suffer the ravages of this system; without forgetting that any improvement can only be achieved through the fight against it. Special congratulations go to the three Brigaders –Josep Almudéver, Juan Miguel de Mora and Virgilio Fernández – to have strong health and maintain the spirit of solidarity that never left.

We also inform you of some events taking place soon:

– 16 December: Inauguration at 13:00 of El Cielo de España: Austrian volunteers in the International Brigades. This exhibition, the result of arduous work by our colleague Georg Pichler, will be at the Pablo Iglesias Foundation, Alcalá de Henares, until 3 March.

– 17 January: Inauguration at 19:00 of The footprint of Solidarity. This exhibition deals with the Canadian doctor Norman Bethune, a world example of solidarity and predecessor of Doctors Without Borders. It will be shown at the Conde Duque Cultural Centre until April 2. In addition, the Canada Foundation and AABI have scheduled a series of activities (conferences, screenings, book presentations etc) on the figure of Dr Bethune and on Canadian volunteers who fought in Spain in the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion of the Fifteenth Brigade. We will soon announce the detailed programme.

– 17 and 18 February: commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Jarama. On 17 February there will be a tribute at the cemetery in Tarancón for those buried there and in the evening a concert-tribute at the Pilar Bardem Theatre, Rivas Vaciamadrid. On 18 February the march to the Jarama memorial will take place across the battle-site of the International Brigades. Details will follow later.

Again we wish you health, happiness and Republic for New Year 2017.
