Book now for IBMT conference on football and the Spanish Civil War

Booking is now open for what promises to be a highly popular IBMT conference day next year with the theme of football and the Spanish Civil War. The main speakers will be Sid Lowe, The Guardian’s football correspondent in Madrid, and Daniel Gray, the author of books both about football culture and the International Brigade volunteers from Scotland.

 

Chaired by Professor Sir Paul Preston, the conference will be held from 11am to 4.30pm at Kellogg College, Oxford, on Saturday 23 March 2019. As well as the speakers there will be films screenings and music from Maddy Carty, Robb Johnson and Na-mara.

 

The IBMT’s annual Len Crome Memorial Conference is named after the Russian-born Lancashire GP who became head of the the chief medical officer of the Spanish Republic’s XV Army Corps. This included the 35th Division, of which the mainly English-speaking 15th International Brigade was part.

 

In addition to writing for The Guardian, Sid Lowe is the author of ‘Fear and Loathing in La Liga: Barcelona vs Real Madrid’ and ‘Catholicism, War and the Foundation of Francoism’.

Daniel Gray’s books include ‘Black Boots and Football Pinks: 50 Lost Wonders of the Beautiful Game’ and ‘Homage to Caledonia: Scotland and the Spanish Civil War’.
