International Brigade Memorial Trust
International Brigade families will be able to place personalised adverts in a special supplement in the Morning Star to mark the 90th anniversary of the start of the Spanish Civil War. The newspaper is offering them a 25 per cent discount.
Co-sponsored by the IBMT and the Marx Memorial Library (MML), the supplement will be published on Saturday 4 July to coincide with the annual commemoration at the International Brigade memorial on London’s Southbank. The war itself began on 17/18 July 1936.
Running to at least 12 pages, the supplement will provisionally feature a message of support from Maxine Peake, an interview with historian Richard Baxell and contributions from, among others, IBMT Executive Officer Helen Oclee-Brown, RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey, the MML’s Meirian Jump, Manuel Moreno and Simon Martinez on the Basque children who came to Britain and Micaela Tracey-Ramos, a member of Unison’s national executive.
There will also mini-biographies of selected Brigaders, a timeline of the war and many historic and current images.
An eighth-page advert will cost £206 and a smaller box £99. International Brigade family members can claim a further 25 per cent discount.

The supplement will go on sale in the Morning Star’s 4 July edition and afterwards will be on sale from the newspaper’s online shop.
The Morning Star prides itself on being the only socialist daily published in the English language worldwide. It is the successor newspaper of the Daily Worker, whose correspondents in Spain played a leading role in supporting the International Brigades and the resistance of the Spanish Republic against fascism.
