Originally erected 1986 by printworkers’ union SOGAT at convalescent home in Rottingdean, Sussex, then unveiled at GPMU union centre at Quorn, Leicestershire, by Jack Jones, November 2002.

Original Battle of the Ebro plaque, naming 90 British Battalion dead, which was unveiled in 2005 on Hill 705 in the Sierra de Pándols but subsequently vandalised by Spanish neo-fascists, was unveiled by Emily Thornberry MP at the Marx Memorial Library, 37a Clerkenwell Green EC1R 0DU on 30 October 2016.

Cork

The Mary Elmes Bridge is named after the Spanish Civil War aid worker, who during the Second World War rescued Jewish children from being sent to Nazi concentration camps. It enables pedestrians to walk across the River Lee between St Patrick’s Quay and Merchants Quay. The bridge was inaugurated in 2019. Mary Elmes (1908-2002) studied in Dublin, London and Geneva, and in 1937 travelled to Spain. There she ran a Quaker children’s hospital in Alicante, which later transferred to a small mountain village to avoid fascist bombs. After two years she escaped with the last of the Spanish Republican refugees to France, where she remained during the Second World War.

Memorial at Dooega, Achill Island (Co Mayo), to Thomas Patten, killed at Boadilla del Monte, December 1936. Financed locally and from the US. Unveiled 28 October 1984.

Dorchester

Located outside Goulds, South Street, Dorchester, DT1 1BS. Statue of Sylvia Townsend Warner (novelist, writer and active supporter of the Spanish Republic) created by Denise Dutton. In the first of two spells in Spain she worked at the hospital in Granen alongside her partner Valentine Ackland. On the second trip she participated in the Second International Congress of Writers for the Defence of Culture, held in Valencia between 4 and 17 July 1937, Campaigned extensively for Spain throughout the war, including being the secretary of Dorset Peace Council.
