A reading of prose and poems exploring the bravery and idealism of the International Brigades to accompany the BBC Radio 3 Proms concert and broadcast later in the evening. Introduced by historian and IBMT Chair Richard Baxell at Imperial College Union, Beit Quadrangle, Prince Consort Road, London SW7 2BB, beginning at 5.15pm. Entry is on a first-come-first-served basis (doors open from 30 minutes before the event begins; capacity is limited). Edited highlights will be broadcast during the interval of the evening’s broadcast.

Unveiling at 1pm of a plaque to local International Brigade volunteer James Alwyn outside Bolton Socialist Club, 16 Wood Street, BL1 1DY, followed by a buffet, a talk about the Spanish Civil War and music from Joe Solo and the Clarion Choir, finishing at 4pm. More information:

Unveiling of a plaque at the site of a home for refugee Basque children during the Spanish Civil War at 2pm at 34 Pearson Park, Hull HU5 2TD, followed by a talk by Manuel Moreno of the Basque Children of ’37 Association UK in the nearby Pearson Park bowling paviion.

80th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Jarama, 12pm to 2.15pm, with light lunch before the lecture, at Shankill Road Library, 298-300 Shankill Road, Belfast BT13 2BN. Speaker: Brian Hanley on ‘The Radical Thirties’; chairperson: Jackie Redpath. After the meeting flowers will be laid on the International Brigade memorial in Writers Square.
