Congratulations go to everyone involved in the writing and production of the International Brigades musical “Goodbye Barcelona” for winning the 2014 award for Best Musical in the Spanish Musical Theatre Awards. It also won Best Stage Director and Best Newcomer.
With typical modesty co-writer Karl Lewkowicz said afterwards that he hoped the awards would help to spread the story of the International Brigades to a wider audience.
“Goodbye Barcelona” even saw off challenges to the top spot from Spanish productions of “The Sound of Music” and “Les Misérables”.
The Catalan production of “Goodbye Barcelona” (pictured below) opened on 24 September last year for an extended run at the Teatre del Raval in Barcelona. It received rave reviews and attracted packed houses.
The musical played for four weeks at the Arcola Theatre, London, in November and December 2011.
“Goodbye Barcelona” is a story of love, war and anti-fascism centred on the fate of Sam, an 18-year-old from London’s East End, and a group of other International Brigade volunteers in the Spanish Civil War.
