Maritime workers and the Spanish Civil War

A multinational special interest group has been set up to share and exchange information about the blockade-runners, seafarers and dockworkers and their organisations who supported the Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39.

Drawn from organisations in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands, the group says it wll have an international perspective on maritime workers’ involvement on the side of the Spanish Republic.

For many people, say the organisers, the war in Spain is an almost forgotten war, isolated in time and space, when some people went to fight in an unknown war.

‘But we want to emphasise strongly that the Spanish Civil War was not an isolated event and that it must be seen in a much larger context,’ they add.

‘The people who went to Spain to support the Spanish Republic were part of a large international social-political movement that fought for democratic rights, equality and social progress.’
