Commemoration of the arrival of Basque Refugee Children in Caerleon in 1937, as part of the Caerleon Arts Festival, on the lawn of the Priory Hotel, High St, Caerleon, Newport NP18 1AG. There will be a number of events on the day marking 80 years since around 4000 children arrived by boat to Southampton, 56 of whom came to Caerleon in Wales. Speakers will include Eddie Butler, acclaimed TV presenter, author and commentator who made the BBC film ‘Wales and the Basque Refugees: The Children’s Story'; Hywel Davies, author of the book ‘Fleeing Franco – How Wales gave shelter to refugee children from the Basque country during the Spanish Civil War’ and Carmen Kilner, Secretary of the Basque Children of ’37 Association UK. There will a guided walking tour of Caerleon to see where the children lived, as well as an exhibition of 1930s memoribilia and a panel discussion including local politicians and people currently working with refugee children.
