On 28 and 29 October, the Asociación de Amigos de las Brigadas Internacionales (AABI) commemorated the 80th anniversary of the arrival of the first groups of International Brigades to the Spanish capital, with events and gatherings in places significant to the battles against Franco’s fascists.

The Marx Memorial Library in London has been awarded a grant of £27,841 from the National Archives to catalogue its International Brigade archive and other material documenting the British response to the Spanish Civil War. 


Supporters of the International Brigades gathered at Newhaven Fort at noon on Saturday 29 October to honour the memory of Stan Hilton, the last surviving member of the British Battalion of the XV International Brigade, who died on 21 October, aged 98 in a nursing home in Melbourne, Australia.
